REAL DETROIT & DEARBORN · 30 EVERYDAY ENCOUNTERS

Welcome ·

Meet Ali Algohary. Your story is your own.

This course serves Arabic-speaking newcomers, travelers and families who need practical English in the United States. Detroit is the setting; the communication skills travel with you.

What you will do

Ask for help, confirm costs, explain needs, handle misunderstandings, respect boundaries and take part in community life. Lessons begin with short exchanges and move toward independent action.

Level and study plan

Designed for developing beginners through early intermediate learners, with support. ESL 202 is a WCE course identifier, not a claim of college credit or a standardized proficiency rating. Suggested plan: 10 weeks, three lessons weekly, about 30–45 minutes each plus optional field practice.

Five steps for each lesson

1. Notice the situation. 2. Read or hear the dialogue. 3. Switch roles. 4. Change one detail and solve the new problem. 5. Complete the task and reflect.

Cultural awareness without stereotypes

There is no single American personality or Arab experience. Norms vary by person, place and institution. Observe, ask, confirm and adapt. Clear boundaries, consent and respectful curiosity work across many settings.

Using the online course

The online course includes 30 American English MP3 dialogues with male, female and child voices as appropriate. Tap the audio player in each lesson to listen, or download its MP3. The MP3s work independently of installed device voices. Optional device reading remains available using U.S. English voices only. All voices are synthesized, not recordings of actors. The PDF contains the full teaching content, plus a visual field notebook with real Detroit and Dearborn photographs. Human voice recordings and authentic environmental audio are not included in this edition.

About these scenarios

All dialogues, characters, prices, sample addresses and practice documents are fictional teaching examples. Real services may use different words and procedures. Do not provide personal information or make a purchase merely to complete a task. Observe or simulate when needed.

A suitcase is missing

I can: Report a missing item and confirm contact details.

Airport agent: Can I see your baggage tag?

Ali: Yes. My suitcase did not arrive.

Airport agent: What does it look like?

Ali: It is a large blue suitcase with a yellow ribbon.

Airport agent: What address should we use for delivery?

Ali: May I give you my hotel address? Could I have a reference number?

Notice the culture ·

For checked baggage, begin with the airline baggage service. A personal item lost elsewhere may use a different lost-property process. Ask which office handles your case.

Your real-life task ·

Use an imaginary baggage tag. Describe color, size and one identifying feature; write the reference number you hear.

Change the situation ·

Agent asks for an address you cannot remember. Ask to check your booking.

Language tip: Could I have…? = polite request, not a question about physical ability.

Check: Why does Ali ask for a reference number?

Show suggested answer

To follow up on the report.

Encounter 02 / 30

Finding the right ride

I can: Confirm a ride before entering.

Ali: Are you my driver?

Driver: What name is the booking under?

Ali: Ali Algohary. Let me check the car details.

Driver: Where are you going?

Ali: This hotel. Is this the correct pickup area?

Driver: Yes. Please put on your seat belt.

Notice the culture ·

Check the driver and vehicle details in your booking. A friendly person offering a ride is not proof that they are your booked driver. Use the designated pickup area.

Your real-life task ·

Compare two fictional booking cards and choose the matching vehicle. Say the destination without announcing your room number.

Change the situation ·

The license plate does not match. Say: I will check with the service first.

Language tip: Is this…? checks identity; Where is…? asks about location.

Check: What information should match?

Show suggested answer

The driver and vehicle details in your booking.

Encounter 03 / 30

Checking in at a hotel

I can: Ask about the full cost and checkout.

Receptionist: Welcome. Do you have a reservation?

Receptionist: Let me explain the charges.

Ali: Thank you. What time is checkout?

Notice the culture ·

A temporary card hold and a final charge are different. Ask the amount and release process instead of assuming every hotel uses the same policy.

Your real-life task ·

Read a fictional booking: room $120, parking $15, tax listed separately. Ask what the final total includes.

Change the situation ·

Your room is noisy. Request a quieter room without blaming the receptionist.

Language tip: I have a reservation; I would like a quieter room.

Check: Does a hold always mean a final charge?

Show suggested answer

No. Ask the hotel to explain it.

Encounter 04 / 30

Meeting a neighbor

I can: Introduce yourself and ask a shared-space question.

Neighbor: Hi! I am Maya. I live next door.

Ali: Nice to meet you. I am Ali.

Maya: How is your move going?

Ali: Pretty well, thanks. Where do we put the recycling?

Maya: The blue bins are behind the building.

Ali: Thanks. Is there a quiet-hours policy?

Your real-life task ·

Introduce yourself in 20 seconds. Ask one practical question without asking about salary, religion or immigration status.

Change the situation ·

You are asked a personal question. Say: I prefer to keep that private.

Language tip: I live next door: present simple for a continuing situation.

Check: Must Ali answer every personal question?

Show suggested answer

No. He can set a polite boundary.

Encounter 05 / 30

Shopping for groceries

I can: Find an item and compare labels.

Ali: Excuse me. Where can I find rice?

Clerk: Aisle six, on the left.

Ali: Is this price for one bag or two?

Clerk: One bag. The smaller bags have a different offer.

Ali: Where can I check the ingredients?

Clerk: On the back of the package.

Your real-life task ·

Use two mock rice labels: 2 lb for $4 and 5 lb for $8. Find the lower price per pound.

Change the situation ·

The shelf label and checkout price differ. Ask the cashier to check.

Language tip: Where can I find…? / Is this price for…?

Check: Which rice has the lower unit price?

Show suggested answer

The 5 lb bag: $1.60 per pound.

Encounter 06 / 30

Ordering food that fits your needs

I can: Ask specific ingredient questions.

Server: Are you ready to order?

Ali: Almost. Is the chicken halal-certified?

Server: I am not sure. I can check.

Ali: Thank you. Does the sauce contain alcohol?

Server: I will ask the kitchen.

Ali: If you cannot confirm, what vegetarian options do you have?

Do not assume a restaurant is halal because of its cuisine or the owner’s background. Vegetarian food can still contain ingredients you avoid. State an allergy separately from a preference.

Your real-life task ·

Build an order with one dietary question, one drink and one confirmation. Partner may say: I am not sure.

Change the situation ·

A guest has a food allergy. Practice asking staff for ingredient information without promising safety.

Language tip: Does it contain…? Use does with singular it.

Check: What should staff do if unsure?

Show suggested answer

Check rather than guess.

Encounter 07 / 30

Understanding the restaurant bill

I can: Check a bill and ask about service charges.

Ali: Could we have separate checks, please?

Server: Certainly. Here is yours.

Ali: Is a service charge already included?

Server: Yes. It is listed here.

Ali: Thank you. Could you explain this extra item?

Your real-life task ·

Use a practice bill: food $24, tax $2, service charge $4. Find the listed total, then ask what the service charge covers.

Change the situation ·

Friends prefer one bill. Agree on a split before paying.

Language tip: Could we have…? is a polite plural request.

Numbers, spelling and sound

Practice thirteen / thirty, fourteen / forty, fifteen / fifty. Ask: Did you say thirteen or thirty? Spell names letter by letter; give a familiar word for a letter when needed. Never pretend that a guess is confirmation.

In quick conversation, “How is it going?” can sound like “How’s it going?” Learn to recognize contractions while keeping your own speech clear. Your goal is understanding, not erasing your accent.

From practice to participation

A week of everyday missions

Day 1: Read a public sign. Explain what action it asks for.

Day 2: Compare two grocery labels without buying anything.

Day 3: Plan a trip with the current transit map, including the return.

Day 4: Find a library activity and draft one registration question.

Day 5: Rehearse an appointment call using a fictional name.

Day 6: Practice an invitation with a partner, including a gracious refusal.

Day 7: Repeat a situation that was difficult and describe your improvement.

Reflection after each mission

What did I notice? What did I assume? What question helped? What will I try next time? Write a short answer in Arabic or English.

Final performance task: Ali’s first independent day

Work in pairs. Plan a bus trip, ask about a library program, order food with a dietary question, read a sample bill, and resolve one misunderstanding. Change at least one detail in each scene. Switch roles.

Simple assessment rubric

Score each area 0–2: task completed; message understandable; question or confirmation used; respectful cultural choice. 0 = not yet, 1 = with support, 2 = independently. Total: 8. A score helps select the next practice; it is not a standardized language rating.

Teacher and family guidance

Read once slowly and once at a comfortable natural pace. Allow pauses and repair. Rotate roles across genders without assigning jobs or behavior by stereotype. Children can practice greetings and permission with an adult; adults retain responsibility for medical, financial and emergency matters. Give feedback on meaning before correcting small grammar errors.

Grounded in place

Detroit, Dearborn and your own neighborhood

Use these prompts to discover local life through evidence rather than assumptions. Detroit and Dearborn are separate municipalities; check which city a service or address belongs to.

Observe, ask, compare

Explore a library calendar, a museum’s visitor page, a transit map and a community event listing. What languages, histories and forms of art appear? Whose voices are represented? What would you ask before attending?

Learn about African American history, Arab American experiences and other communities through institutions and people who choose to share their stories. Do not ask a stranger to explain an entire culture. A respectful opening is: Is there a place you recommend where I could learn more?
